Our final STEM activity based on the book Maybe by Kobi Yamada was Piggy Parachute. The students learned about the force of drag and were challenged to create a parachute and basket and use it to help their pig land safely on the ground. * This was the most challenging of the STEM pig activities. - Dominic (Fred Douglass) * I liked the parachute activity, it was fun! - Katherine (Joe Wright) * It was a challenge to get my parachute to land where I wanted it to. - Adriana (Fred Douglass) Our third STEM activity based on the book Maybe by Kobi Yamada is Pigtail Spin. The students learned about the force of gravity and created paper helicopters to transport their pigs safely to the ground. *I learned that airplanes and helicopters need gravity to land. - Axel G. (Fred Douglass) * I learned how to use gravity to make my helicopter spin faster. - Saul (Joe Wright) * So far, pigtail spin has been my favorite STEM activity! - Maddox (Fred Douglass) The second STEM activity based on the book Maybe by Kobi Yamada is Barnyard Blast-Off. The students learned about the force of thrust and they created straw rockets to launch their pig toward a target. * I learned to make sur to seal off the air to make my straw rocket air tight to get the highest points possible! - Axel (Joe Wright) * I learned that thrust is what makes a rocket move off the ground. - Parker (Fred Douglass) * You really shouldn't use too much tape on your straw rocket because it will make it harder to hit where the target where you want it to. - Madelyn (Joe Wright) After reading the book Maybe by Kobi Yamada, our 4th grade students reviewed figurative language and participated in four STEM activities. The first STEM activity was called When Pigs Fly and the students learned about the lever simple machine. * I learned that a catapult uses a lever to launch objects into the air. - Jayden (Fred Douglass) * I was able to create a simple lever using a ruler and a glue stick to launch my pig! - Celia (Joe Wright) * I was able to launch my pig really far with using my lever. - Maddox (Fred Douglass) * I figured out where to place the fulcrum under my lever to launch my pig the longest distance! - Nathan (Joe Wright) Fred the worm capsized while boating, and can’t get to his lifejacket. Students must get Fred into his lifejacket and back in his boat using only 4 paperclips. The challenge is that they cannot touch the cup, Fred the gummy worm, or the gummy lifesaver with their hands at all. They may only use the paperclips and teamwork to accomplish the task! * The hardest part was getting the lifejacket on Fred. - Elyse (Fred Douglas) * Putting the lifejacket on Fred was a challenge but we were able to do it! - Nathan (Joe Wright) * I really enjoyed this activity! - Jayden (Fred Douglas) * The best part was getting to eat the gummy worm! - Tucker (Fred Douglas) * Saving Fred was fun! - Grace (Joe Wright) |
